Background

Background

Justice of the Peace (JP) in Ontario are judicial officers presiding over provincial offences, bail hearings, and early-stage criminal proceedings. They are community-based, appointed officials who handle matters like by-law infractions, traffic tickets, and search warrants, rather than full trials for severe indictments.

City of Brantford JPs wanted a new re-designed court space that is modern, accessible and inclusive and so, they reached out to us to design a new space for them to work in.

Project Challenge and Objectives

To re-design an accessible & user-friendly court-space for the City of Brantford Ontario, Justice of the Peace in the One Market building.

Project Challenge:

Project Objectives:

User Research

Online Survey Questions:

What are some challenges you would think judges would face in a courtroom and why?

How would judges expect information and rooms to be organized in the court building?

How do judges interact with the juries during trials?

How do judges interact with the plaintiffs/defendants in the courtroom?

How do the judges interact with attorneys in the courtroom?

In your opinion how accessible and inclusive are current courtrooms to people with various disabilities, faiths and identities (specifically mention brantford courtrooms if you have experience)

Research Findings

Online Survey Analytics:

In order to visualize & conceptualize our user group (POA Judges), we created a user persona.

User Persona and Journey Map

In order to visualize & conceptualize our users journeys through the court-space, we created a journey map.

Usability Testing

We tested our mid-fidelity prototype through interviews with peers, and found insights to help us improve our high-fidelity prototypes.

We asked participants:

To share their thoughts from the perspective of various users

Pros and cons of the design

Additional feedback

✅ Positive Feedback:

Different style doors being good signifiers of what's behind them.

Various separate doors into the courtroom

Lounge space for staff

❌ Need improvement in:

Lack of space in some areas

Need for judges rooms close to their entry point into the courtroom

Final Prototypes

Prototype #1:

An early realistic prototype using the SIMS 4.

Prototype #2:

A realistic prototype that fits the One Market building map using TinkerCAD.

Prototype #3:

A blue-sky ideal prototype using TinkerCAD.
